FLY AWAY PEACE

google image

Scarlet sky storming furiously

Spewing hatred, venom, anger

Released from serpentine hearts

Darkening dreamy eyes

Death’s dizzy delight

Noor-al-Najdi*’s

Lips’ slip sealed

White Dove

Groans

*a ten year old girl killed in Rafah by Israel bombing

(The poem is a Nonet that has nine lines. The first line has nine syllables, the second eight syllables and so on until line nine that finishes with one syllable)

  1. What a misery the Middle East is. Why does it have to always end in groans? Well captured, but sadly so.

  2. We are overwhelmed with this all pervading misery all over the world. Never ending. Heartrending. No let-up it seems.

  3. This poem is powerfully chaotic! It's melancholy but very alive

  4. Powerful poem, you nailed the nonet structure which should have been hard to write. Btw, I shared a poem about the same issue too. It is heart breaking to see the things happening in Israel.

  6. Very sad when children are caught in gunfire or are victims of war ~ Each side has its own reasons but for me, war is deplorable specially when the innocents are killed ~

  7. You have nailed it, Sumana. The white dove seems to have flown away, and at the moment there looks like there is little chance it will return. A poignant poem.

  8. ugh. i feel much the same in thinking of the kids fleeing south america...fleeing hte violence of their peers....9 year olds killing 7 year olds for refusal to pay protection money...ugh....tight little verse....

  9. No doves of peace in that situation. The childrens' faces are painful to look upon. Their eyes are a plea to adults to stop the madness.

  11. Interesting form. It looks like one wing of a dove. May the other wing soon come into being! You capture the sounds of grief even from the lips of the disappointed dead.

  12. We enjoy our children' smiles and laugh, not what show these photos...
very sad ..and form really underlines the tragedy.

  14. It's so sad, the misery people bestow on each other. You capture that suffering so well in your poem. I guess not all poems need to be of love and happiness, but they must also record the truth of humans. Well done.

  15. When will this ever end? We are in the 21st. Century. How does this hate between tribes continue in the absence of "Common Morality"?

  19. The image, story and poem breaks my heart and gives me a sickening feeling deep within my soul. It is an absolute tragedy that our young children become victims of socio-political agendas they know nothing about.

Thank you for sharing this story, and also thank you for sharing this new poetic form (at least it's new to me.) I will try it sometime.

  20. Your words and pictures speak volume but it seems no one is listening. Will the madness ever end?

  23. You've created a beautiful sadness with your words . . . It's a reminder that life is bittersweet.

  24. It is a horror to see such blatant violence and killings. In other areas there are efforts to contain them or even steps taken to resolve them. But sadly it is allowed to escalate in the Middle East where political will to resolve them are nil. Powerful write Sumana!
